This site opened for business on August 23, 1996, the 59th anniversary of Roussel's death. It is strictly a labor of love. Working to produce it has, with great vividness, shown me that you get out of music what you put into it. By studying Roussel's music so intently, I've derived a much deeper enjoyment from his music -- and, I'd even go so far as to say, from his life. BTW, I'm not a musicologist. I'm just a lowly oboist and everyone knows what all that concentrated air pressure does to oboists' brains, right? If you see something that is in error, please let me know but keep this disclaimer in mind. I'd love to hear from you if you have any comments, additions, corrections, complaints, etc., about the Roussel home page. So please, drop me a few bytes. |

An invaluable feature of this site is the samples of Roussel's music. Some of these samples
come from works that are not commercially available; they were recorded off French radio and
sent to me by a visitor to the site.
So if you want to get a feel for the variety of Roussel's music, go the Works page and look for titles displayed in bold. |

Back when I first discovered Albert Roussel's music, I was struck by the "peasant dance" element. A painting by Pieter Breugel, the greatest of the old Flemish masters, reminded me of the music (Dance of the Bride, used on the Works page) and it was with great delight that I later read that other people agreed with me. So Breugel was a natural when I was looking for a graphic theme for this website.
I thought of searching the Web for a Breugel home page and linking to it, then thought better of it. If you like the paintings hinted at here, get thee to a library for some books! (Or, if you're lucky enough, an art museum for the real thing.) Web graphics simply don't do this sort of thing justice. |
