This page is a series of pointers to demonstrations of how to do things with the Opus One server.

Many of these are adapted from other scripts and other HTML examples. These are not intended to be examples of style; simply of how to get certain simple things done with the Opus One server and configuration.

Imagemaps are combinations of graphics, HTML, and driver files which enable clients to click on points on a graphic to jump around a WWW site. Our server fully supports image maps in many formats. The example here shows the two best supported formats.

Mail-in forms are very popular. They allow browsers to fill information in on a form and have that (invisibly) mailed to a particular username. The form-to-mail program we have simply takes all of the fields on the form, formats them, and sends them to the user listed in the form. The example here shows how this is done. We also have an older version of this program without as many capabilities. For the record, it is documented here, although I would suggest you not use it.

A variation on mail-in forms is FAX-in forms. Look at the example here to see how that's done (with the old program); it's basically the same for the new program. There's also a variation-on-the-variation, which is FAX back service. You can place a button on a page (like this example shows) and we'll FAX the page back to the requester.

Another variation on mail-in forms is forms which simply get printed out by the user. Not a lot of call for it, but you never know. Look at the example here to see how to do it using our filloutform script.

We've had to make some changes to the preprocessor to support some user needs. (Read all about the preprocessor here.) Two related changes are the random-includer at this link and the rotate-includer at this link.

Counters are a special case of the pre-processor. The HTML preprocessor is activated by a file with an extension of .HTMLX instead of .HTML. You can use the pre-processor to implement counters, modification dates and times, file includes, and logical names. The example here shows some examples of how the pre-processor works.

One cute script we wrote actually shows you the temperature in Tucson, Arizona (both inside and outside Opus One, in three different locations) over a multi-day period. This is mostly for us, but you might find it interesting as an example of the power of scripts and a little bit of programming. We have a similar script which we use to control our HVAC system. You can see the current information, but you won't be allowed to change the settings (for obvious reasons). You'll need both Javascript and some patience for this last one; it takes about 8 seconds for it to query all the data off of the network.

Another WWW application we've installed is a WWW-to-X.500 gateway which will let you query the X.500 directory via the WWW. You can go there directly by following this link.

You can index your site to enable people to search your documents for keywords. Here is a demo and instructions on how to set up indexing and how to do a simple search. If you want a more complex or elaborate search, you will want to read about gsearch, the generic search scripts.

You can give users a pick list of URLS to visit while using a minimum of screen real estate with the p_launch utility.

You can set up a forum or threaded discussion with a little help from Opus One.

A forum is a free-running collection of messages which simply puts the latest post at the top. The size is limited to a pre-set number of messages (which you choose) and it is cleaned up automatically once a day. Here is a demo and instructions on how to set it up.

If you want to add a simple calendar feature to your web site, you can pre-load the URL for the calendar program to display the months or years you want. Start here to figure out what's going on.

You can archive a mailing list using our Hypermail utility. Here's a pointer to the VMS WWW server mailing list which is being archived that way. As usual, send mail to support if you want to do this.

This server comes with some other examples that are less interesting (but may be of interest to you if you're a guru or webmaster). Rather than replace them all here, you can simply follow this link to jump to the original documentation on the server, which includes lots of relevant examples.

WWW Designers may want to use this collection of scripts to help debug other scripts and to get environmental information:
