Netscape v7.1 Instructions
Here are some tips and tricks for setting up Netscape Navigator to use with
Opus One. Before you start, you will need to know two things. One is your
email address. This is always expressed with a fully qualified domain name.
For example, "rj@opus1.com" or "romeo.julieta@sovset.org."
The other is your mailbox name. This is just a single word, which may have
numbers in it. It may or may not match your email address. For example, your
mailbox name might be "rj" or "sovset123." You will also need to know your
password, of course.
-
Open Netscape and go to Edit->Mail and Newsgroups. (There are other
settings which determine things like how Netscape will edit your mail and
whether you prefer text or HTML in the Preferences menu, but these don't have
anything to do with getting connected to our mail servers.)
The "Mail & Newsgroups" menu is
what you need. You should have a list of accounts on the left, plus 'Local
Folders', 'Outgoing Server (SMTP)' and perhaps 'Free Webmail.'
-
Click on "Add Account." You are adding an Email account.
Enter your own name (such as "Romeo Julieta") in the
"Your name:" box, and your email address (such as "rj@opus1.com") in the "Email
address:" box.
-
Now, we're going to add an Incoming Mail Server.
The server name under "Incoming Server:" should be
"mail.opus1.com" and the server type should be "POP." On the next screen,
Netscape will ask you for the user name given to you by your email provider
(that's us). The user name should be
your Opus One mailbox name (such as rj or sovset123).
99.99% of our users are POP users. If you are an IMAP user (you would know
this) then the steps are the same except you should select "IMAP" as the server
type.
-
Click on through to finish the setup.
-
Some of the default settings Netscape has set up for your account are probably
not what you want. If you leave them that way, you'll run out of disk space
and be unable to send or receive mail through us. Click on the account you
just created and go to Server Settings. The box "Check for new messages every
10 minutes" is checked; you want to uncheck that box. Make sure also
that the "Leave messages on server" box is not checked.
Now go to "Copies & Folders." Netscape is set to put copies of your outgoing
mail in a folder attached to our server. You don't want to do that. Instead,
select the "Sent" folder which is in Local Folders (i.e., on your own hard
drive). Do the same for Drafts and Templates. You want these to be tied to
your local hard drive, not your ISP.
-
Click on Outgoing Sever (SMTP).
There are two possibilities. Either you are on an Opus One
connected network (i.e., you are in Tucson and you have a direct line to Opus
One, such as a DSL or T1 connection), or your are using some other ISP (cable
modem, AOL, Earthlink, etc.). If you are on an Opus One network, follow the
instructions in step (7).
If you are on some other ISP's network, follow the
instructions in step (8). If you roam between networks, use (8).
-
For Outgoing Mail Server (connected to Opus One networks).
Enter "mail.opus1.com" in the "Outgoing mail
(SMTP) server:" box. Enter your mailbox name (such as rj or sovset123) in the
"Outgoing mail server user name:" box. For "Use Secure Socket Layer (SSL)...,"
select "Never." This will give you the best performance.
-
For Outgoing Mail Server (connected to other ISPs).
Enter "mail.opus1.com:2525" in the "Outgoing
mail (SMTP) server:" box. Don't forget the colon and 2525. Enter your mailbox
name (such as rj or sovset123) in the "Outgoing mail server user name:" box.
For "Use Secure Socket Layer (SSL)...," select "If Possible." This will give
you the best security.
That's all you need to do. Netscape is fully set up to safely and securely
read mail from your mailbox on Opus One.
